I know NICS isn’t exactly a fan favorite show, even though it’s usually one of the top ten shows year after year. It’s probably “your parents’ show” or as a friend once told me “a show for old people.” Well, I don’t quite believe that, for it to be that popular it has to reach across age differences to an extent and well, like the Old Dog says, I am old, lol. This was all a long lead in to the fact that NCIS is one of my favorite shows. In a future post I might write more on Gibbs and company, but today I wanted to talk about one of its spin offs. The first one based in LA I don’t like. Everything that make NCIS so good they seemed to throw away and go towards just the typical action adventure type show.
Which leads us to their second spin off, NCIS: New Orleans. I don’t have cable and my digital antenna sucks so all my TV viewing is done through Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and when I purchase a series on DVD, so I hadn’t seen the show besides the two parter that came on the original series to introduce the show and characters. I liked what I saw. Unfortunately CBS shows do not come on Hulu, CBS wants to do their own streaming service, but I am not going to pay for just one network. They need to join Hulu, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. And for some reason they aren’t on Netflix, which I don’t understand as much. NCIS in on Netflix. I guess CBS is trying to really drive people to their own service. Still again I refuse to pay for one streaming network. It’s been out on DVD for awhile now, the second season is over and actually out on DVD so the first season has been out there for at least a year. It’s just been more than I’m willing to pay for a TV show on DVD. There’s a sweet spot for me, when a show reaches a certain price point that I’m willing to buy, but most shows when they first come out aren’t there. Normally after a wait the show will drop and I’ll pick it up if I’m interested. NCIS: New Orleans never seemed to drop, so I kept putting off buying it. Finally I saw it at a decent price point and picked it up.
I’m almost done watching the first season and I have to give it a thumps up. There have been some growing pains, as they learn the characters, but nothing too bad. It helps that I’ve always been a big fan of Scott Bakula, the star of the show. From his days on Quantum Leap to Men of a Certain Age I’ve always enjoyed Mr. Bakula. I’m also a fan of CCH Pounder.
This show follows the path of the original a lot closer, to which I like a lot more.
And than there’s the fact that the show takes place in my city, New Orleans. I love watching the show and seeing places that I know and have been to. That might be a regular occurrence for people that live in LA or New York and watch tv, but for those of us that live someplace like New Orleans it doesn’t happen that often. Plus they’ve made the city part of the show. This show wouldn’t be the same if it wasn’t in New Orleans and I like it even moreso for that fact.
Like I said I’m almost done with the first season and I’ve enjoyed it. I’ll definitely be looking to buy the second season.
