AYLA is INSANE

After self-publishing two issues of Ayla Speaker for the Dead, I am pleased to announce that the series will now be published by Insane Comics.  I’ve mentioned this on Facebook but let’s make this my official announcement.  I couldn’t be happier.  I’ve very happy to be part of the family at Insane Comics.  They publish some great comics, so you should go over there and check out their site.  My artist buddy, Tyler Carpenter writes one of their titles, DEMONS, and it’s worth checking out.  I have a lot of confidence that they will be able to do things for Ayla that I was not able to.  They’ll start with the first issue and it will be out in Jan of 2018.

And in that regards, one of the things they’ve already managed to do is get Ayla an exclusive for Cedar Rapids Comic Con in Feb of next year.  Javi Laparra has did another outstanding job with the cover.  This will be the first issue and the only place you’ll be able to get it with this cover will be at Cedar Rapids Comic Con.

I’m really excited for the future of Ayla and being part of the Insane Comics group.

Comic Updates

Figured it was time to update some of the comics I’m working on.

Ayla cover logo 2

As you should all know by now, the first issue is out, which collects the first 24 pages of the webcomic.  We haven’t posted any new pages on the site yet, but we are working hard to get back up and online.  We should start posting the pages for the second issue before much longer.  The first ten pages are all in some sort of completion and I’m working on the script for the back half of the book.  This issue is going to be a little more violent than the previous issue and should lead into the third issue which should tie up the first storyline.

This one is on hold for the moment as I search for a new artist.  Hopefully I’ll be able to announce some good news soon and we can get this back on track.  I really love this story and want to see it complete.  The plan was to have the first issue out by now, but unfortunately the best laid plans and all that stuff….

Boxie cover

The newest comic.  This is coming along like a house on fire.  (mmmm, is that a good comparison?  It’s meant to be.)  The artist Tyler Carpenter already has ten pages complete and is almost to the point of having to wait for me to provide pages of script.  The first issue is a one and done story, detailing her origin.  We may actually publish this before we put it up on the web we’re making such good time with it.  This is going to be a really fun comic.

This one is written and I’m waiting on some of the art for it.  I just got two new pages today and they look great!  I’m down to about four or five pages and this one will be ready to be printed.  It’s got an amazing cover by Javi Laparra and I can’t wait to get it out there.

This was just published last month and contains an old story by myself and artist Ron Wilber.  It’s first publication probably saw less than a dozen people picking it up and it was buried inside a huge 80 page anthology so I’m pretty confident that not many people have read this yet.  It’s a funny story that imagines what if Hunter Thompson retired, moved to Florida and became a Republican?  Well, not really Mr. Thompson, but a character in the same vein.

cover to 1cover to 2

These two comics should be out by the end of the month, they’re at the print now.  They are two different comic, just with one awesome cover by the always talented Javi Laparra again.  The first one collects my short comic book stories over the years and the second some prose stories and articles I’ve written.  And of course both have the introductions about when and where the stories were written.

vth final version

This is the first collection of interviews from Voices to hear and is pretty much finished, but I’m going to have to wait on printing it for a bit, until I have some more money to get it done.  This will done as a perfect bound book and clock in around a hundred pages.   So the price is going to be a little more than on the regular comic book printing.  It’s coming, just maybe be another month or two before I can get to it.

And for all the other work I’ve talked about and some I haven’t talked about, it’s all in one form or another, but right now nothing close enough for me to really announce.  There are some great comics if we get them done.  I’ve got the collection of all my old Lizards stories from Critters once I get them all together.  And probably a few things I’ve probably even forgot about.

The First Chapter

Ayla page 24

Javi and I just finished 24 pages over at Ayla Speaker for the Dead.  This concludes our first chapter of the first storyline.  The first story is scheduled to run three chapters, if all goes according to plan and I don’t add more to it.  Originally I was thinking it was going to be only two chapters, but as I wrote more of the story grew and at the moment the outline calls for three chapters.  With the first chapter complete we are preparing it for a printed version.  As we complete 24 pages the plan is to print it so you can own your own copy of the comic.  We are very excited for this and can’t wait to actually hold a copy of Ayla in our hands.  We may miss a week or two of publishing while we get it ready, but we’ll be back to putting pages up shortly.

Tumblr

While I have two current websites and more on the way that show new comics I am working on, my Tumblr page has a lot of old comics I’ve done that you can read.   The site is The Old Dog and it has all sorts of things on it.  I post new pages from Ayla and anything new I’m working on there, but I also am in the midst of scanning and posting most of my old work for everyone to read.  Plus columns and all sorts of other things.  Check it out.

First art for Ayla

ayla1

Wanted to share this with everyone.  I know I’ve shown some of the pages from Ayla, but this was the first piece of art Javi Laparra created for Ayla.  I thought it captured what I was looking for so well.  Phil Woodward created the logo and added it to the page.  I think this is a print just waiting to sell.

Science Fiction and Me

We’re getting closer to publishing the first page for Ayla speaker for the dead.  We’re still a little ways off, but I’m holding eight finished pages just waiting to see the light of day, a few more pages like that and we’ll be up and running.  The site Ayla speaker for the dead is up now.  I just posted a 3,600 word essay titled “Science Fiction and Me”.  Go check it out and let me know what you think.

I haven’t shared any of my work on here yet, so I thought it was time to start.  This is for an upcoming webcomic called Ayla Speaker for the Dead.  The words are by me and everything else is by the talented Javi Laparra.  I’m not going to promise any time line on this yet, because whenever I do I just get myself in trouble.  But I’m feeling really good about this and am hoping it will start before Christmas.  The above images are from different pages and show everything from penciled layouts to a completely finished page with the lettering.  I normally don’t post a page that is lettered, those I want to hold off until we actually have the storyline running, but for this one time I wanted to put it here just to showcase the art.  I don’t want to give too much away yet, but the storyline is set in the future and is set in my hometown of New Orleans.  I’ll talk more about this and post more as we keep working on it.
